On Lesser Evil

The idea of “Lesser of Two Evils” is absurd on its face.

Because a “Lesser Evil” is still Evil.

When you attempt to rationalize your support of evil deeds by telling yourself that it could be worse, you cut yourself off from actually trying to make things better.

The “Greater Evil” you fight against will never subside.  In every single case, the Greater Evil will become more malicious.  On the flip side, that Lesser Evil continues down the same slope, taking the previous position that the Greater Evil had just given up.  The cycle continues until the one day when you wake up and find yourself completely powerless, wondering why the Lesser Evil didn’t do more “Good.”

Lesser Evil does will never transition to any kind of “Good.”  Lesser Evil does not believe in Justice.  Lesser Evil still sacrifices people to the altar of its own power.  Lesser Evil still works in the service of Greater Evil whether you want to believe it or not.

Accepting a Lesser Evil means that you compromise your soul.  It means that you’re willing to sacrifice others, even if it means their lives must be forfeit, to accept the Lesser Evil.  When you’re willing to accept the Lesser Evil, it means that you stop working for Justice.  You stop working for Fairness.  Truth is merely a casualty in maintaining the illusion of Progress by accepting the Lesser Evil.

What is more important?  Justice?  Or the illusion of progress?

  1. Hey! Someone in my Myspace group shared this website with us so I came to look it over. I’m definitely loving the information. I’m bookmarking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Fantastic blog and outstanding design and style.

  2. Pragmatism till the fire of empire then the rebuild with temporary bursts of momentary “ok”. But maybe that is pessimism. I don’t think so though. When you see life on a spectrum, deny black and white thinking and admit all positions are arbitrary and personally constructed: there are only lesser evils or shades of good, you decide, and then you choose from what is on offer with reference to your personal and inevitably slanted perspective. Any other position is dictatorship by necessity.

    Or not.
